Product photos in the textile sector represent a special challenge. In general, it depends on how the textiles should be represented. Not everyone has a model available that can present garments attractively. If, for example, you want to offer textiles to an online shop or an auction house, there are two practical solutions.
Photographing textiles with the help of a tailor doll
If you own a tailor’s doll, you can ideally also use it for product photography. Garments look their most natural when worn. To do this, put on the tailor doll with the desired garments. This even has the advantage of placing the doll mobile in front of the desired background. It is important that the clothing is well illuminated. If you have your garden or balcony, you can use natural daylight.
With a small telephoto lens and a shallow depth of field, the background can fall into the blur, and the subject can be highlighted. In this way, garments and accessories, such as handbags and shoulder bags, can be skillfully staged. Turning the tailor doll always results in new viewing angles. If you want, you can then use an image editing program to cut out the parts of the picture and make a good product photo.
Photographing textiles on the table
Clothing can also be photographed on the table. To do this, it must be spread flat. Very flat tables are particularly suitable for this. The subjects should be photographed from above. Possible wrinkles should be eliminated beforehand. If you use a normal kitchen table, you should use a small ladder and photograph from above. Here, too, optimal illumination is crucial. In addition to the usual room lighting, the integrated camera flash or, even better, the clip-on flash can also be used. The textiles are spread flat on the table. This is great for pants, towels, and bed linen.
With jackets and blouses, a little skill is required to present them appealingly. In addition to an overall view, it is also a good idea to record details at close range. Important details, such as a button placket, interesting accessories, or the lining, should be photographed as closely as possible. After all, the potential buyer wants to get an accurate picture of these textiles. Handbags and shoes, for example, can be photographed excellently in a light tent. You can still place discreet decorative items at the edges if you want. If you want to offer your products for Christmas, you can put a small candle, a Christmas tree ball, or a fir branch.
